Stress urinary incontinence in men is the complaint of involuntary loss of urine with activities such as coughing, sneezing or lifting heavy objects. About 10% of men suffer from some type of incontinence, more commonly with age. Male stress urinary incontinence, specifically, is usually attributable to prior prostate or pelvic surgery, neurologic injury, or trauma.

To help clarify the type and severity of male incontinence, physical exam and diagnostic studies are necessary. At West Coast Urology, we offer a range of treatments for this condition. Rehabilitative techniques such as behavioral modification, pelvic floor muscle training, biofeedback, and electrical stimulation are all considered first line treatments. For men with more severe incontinence that does not respond to conservative measures, complex urodynamics and cystoscopy may be necessary. In the most severe cases, surgical treatment with insertion of a male sling or artificial urinary sphincter can be beneficial in appropriately selected patients.
