What is a male sling for urinary incontinence?

The male sling procedure is used to treat men who experience urinary incontinence due to sphincter weakness or insufficiency. Sphincter insufficiency is often caused by a prior pelvic surgery, including TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) and radical prostatectomy (an operation that removes the entire prostate). During the male sling procedure, synthetic mesh-like tape is positioned around the urethral bulb. The tape slightly compresses the urethra and moves it into a new position. This action has allowed many men to overcome mild-to-moderate urinary incontinence.

One major advantage to this surgical procedure is that it can be performed with only one small incision in the perineum (the area between the base of the scrotum and the anus). This allows for a very short recovery process. During the procedure, synthetic mesh is placed in the groin area to compress the urethra under it.

What can I expect during the procedure?

The procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours and is performed as a same day surgery or overnight stay. Incisions are made through the perineal tissue (beneath the scrotum). The sling is then positioned around part of the urethral bulb. By wrapping the surgical tape around the urethral bulb, the sling slightly and gently moves the urethra into a new position. You may need to use a catheter for a day after the procedure.

What will I experience during the recovery process?

Every patient is different, but most men expect a quick recovery time. A majority of our patients resume normal activities 1-2 weeks after the procedure and full activity can be resumed in 6 weeks. Complications are rare, but they include pain and inflammation, urinary retention, urethral or tissue damage and bleeding and irritation at the site of the wound.
