Dr. Alec Koo received his BS in Psychobiology from UCLA in 1982 and his MD in 1986. He completed his residency in Surgery/Urology at UCLA as Chief in 1992. Dr. Koo has been with our practice since 1992.

He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Urology, Fellow of American College of Surgeon, and as a Regents Scholar of UCLA School of Medicine, a member of UCLA’s Honors College, and Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Koo had been an Assistant Professor of Surgery/Urology at UCLA, Clinical Instructor of Surgery/Urology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, CA. He is a current member of AUA, CMA, LACMA, SLS, AACU.

He has hospital privileges at Little Company of Mary Hospital and Torrance Memorial Hospital, both in Torrance, CA. He is fluent in English, Chinese, and urological Spanish.

Dr. Koo was very patient with me while I told him of my concerns and specific issues. He even waited patiently while I looked up a test result on my phone to see which blood test I'd already had at another facility. He very clearly, thoroughly, and calmly explained his evaluation of my health complications, anatomy, etc, and what tests he would be ordering and why. It's obvious he has a ton of experience and knowledge to draw from in assessing what might be ailing me and how to best confirm and correct it. I feel confident he'll help me get better and that I'll get a full understanding of it all, which is very reassuring.

I'm extremely grateful that Dr. Koo took me as a patient. I was desperate for a doctor to help me with my sudden onset with kidney stones and wasn't yet established with a urologist since I moved to the area. My ER visit didn't help with what I needed, which was ultimately a urologist. I was having a ridiculous amount of pain, and was concerned about any damage that might be happening in my body. I called around for help and no one would take me in for an appointment for another 2 months! I was so fortunate to have found Dr. Koo, he not only took me in the day I called, but also has been diligent with my care thus far. Dr. Koo ranks at the top of all my doctors. His physician skills are excellent. His strongest skill is his listening skill. He listens to a list of concerns and then walks through each of them. At the end of a session, I always feel better than when I walked in. He is also careful not to utilize surgery when there are other less invasive options.

This review is specifically for Dr. Koo, not for the office that he works in (I would rate the office VERY differently). I made the decision with my wife to end my ability to procreate when our second child was born this year. Although vasectomy is a common procedure, men are entrusting the health of their delicate area to the knowledge and skill level of the doctor. Dr. Koo was literally perfect in my experience from start to finish. He first built up credibility with me by making sure I understood all of the ramifications of getting the procedure done, and asked me questions to make sure not only that I was committed, but that it was necessary (like if my wife was closer to menopause, maybe we just wait until she's no longer fertile). The day of the procedure, he made sure I was comfortable and that there was as little pain as possible (very important). And equally as important, I experience zero infection or bruising afterwards, having an easy recovery. I HIGHLY recommend him for vasectomy.

Dr. Koo has proven to be a very reliable and knowledgeable doctor in his field. Plus, when he encountered a problematic medical condition with me, he was not afraid to reach out and discuss my condition with other experts. Because of this, I was able to avoid major surgery and completely resolve my issue with medication that is no longer required. Dr. Koo has a very warm and friendly manner and makes sure you understand your medical condition and all the treatment options. He will then suggest a course of action based on his experience and what he thinks is best for you. I don't think one could ask for more in a doctor. I highly recommend Dr. Koo.

Dr. Koo treated my father, Ion Rusu for 14 years and I can safely say that if it was not for Dr. Koo, my father would have been dead long ago. Dr. Koo gave years of life to my father! During all this period, Dr. Koo exhibited a level of professionalism and compassion that can be set as example in the medical field. He coordinated my fatherâ??s treatment with dedication and optimism, always a step ahead of the diseases; it was not always easy as he was dealing with prostate cancer that was unpredictable and aggressive. I did into believed in miracles until I experienced the story of my father under Dr. Kooâ??s care. Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2000 by a different doctor and given only six months to live, my father became a patient of Dr. Koo. Even though his specialty is urology, not oncology Dr. Koo created a treatment plan for my father that exceeded all expectations. From day one, he treated my father with the most respect and for over 13 years he was always a step ahead of the disease. Every new treatment available or on trial was presented and tried in his case. As I closely monitored this relationship and was part of the team, as a translator and a coordinator on my fatherâ??s side, I could not stop of being amazed each and every time we met with Dr. Koo on the breadth of knowledge and interest he put in his job and further in helping his patients. This year, at Dr. Kooâ??s recommendation we moved to Dr. Nishimoto and together they tried one last thing for my father- the chemo. As the last resort, it lasted for couple of months after which finally my father succumbed to the diseases that he fought for 14 years. As sad as it is to accept the reality of today, I cannot stop in recalling and appreciating all that was done for my father over this period of time. From six months to 14 years is a pretty good record and Dr. Koo was a key part of this success story. A gentleman, a great doctor and a superb human being, compassionate and caring, Dr. Koo is by far on the top of the list of doctors. Thank you Dr. Koo!
